Black and white won’t solve your grain issue haha. It’s a personal preference thing at that point. I like my photos grainy, so high ISO is cool in my books. If you don’t like it, then use a flash if you’re stuck in a dark, dingy venue or just lean against a wall/rest your camera on an amp for a couple shots if it’s not in anyone’s way.

  3. Anonymous said: I'm shooting (digitally) my first local show next weekend do you think it's necessary to use a tripod?

A tripod will definitely hinder you more than it will help you. You’ll just be in everyone’s way with a tripod and you’ll be too stationary, your shots will end up super repetitive and mundane. Bump up your ISO or use an external flash instead.

    Sunset in Joshua Tree, California

It’s recently become clear to me that a lot of my “fan base” (please give me a better word to use) really only follows my work when I post band/music related images. When I started getting into photography, I shot my friends, my brothers skateboarding, landscapes, and things that looked aesthetically pleasing around me. I never really got into band photography until I moved to Toronto in 2009. I really, really, really wanted to go on this trip to California and create a zine of the images I took there to prove to myself that I am still capable of creating this sort of undemanding, romantic, kind, delicate work even though I strayed from it for a long time. This sort of thing seemed really ‘art school’ to me for awhile, mostly because I never used a medium format camera too much outside of things I created for school projects. Now that I’ve finally bought a Hasselblad, I’m really focusing on bringing my two styles together, and this is a progression towards that. I know there aren’t grainy photos of cool bands or gritty images of my drunk friends getting stick & pokes in this collection - and no, I’m not giving up on that whatsoever - but shooting this and documenting this felt really good to me, and sharing it would feel even better.

My zine, titled Some Other Place, will be up for a sale in my shop in about a week as I’m putting some finishing touches on the layout now. It’ll be 8.5 x 11”, 50 pages, stapled, with a cardstock cover. They’ll be sold for $12 ($2 shipping in North America and $4 internationally) and will be shipped out at the very beginning of September.

I’m posting this whole thing because I know a lot of my followers haven’t seen my work that isn’t raw and harsh, but I’d really love if you gave it a shot.

    Thanks a ton!

It’s available now, grab it please.
